Electra Main Street Program
A Fact Sheet

In October 1997, Electra joined four other towns as official 1998
Texas Main Street Cities. The action was the culmination of hard
work by local people interested in the economic survival of Electra
and the preservation of it's historic resources. The partnership of the City
of Electra and the Texas Main Street Program provides an opportunity
to accomplish both goals.

What is the Main Street Program ?
Main Street is a state and national program designed to further
economic redevelopment of communities through historic preservation.
In Electra, that means preserving what remains of our historic downtown
and applying successful marketing, management and revitalization
approaches to remaining and attracting business to the community.

Main Street approach works in four areas to accomplish revitalization:

Organization
Design
Promotion
Economic Development

The local program is governed by the City of Electra, whose Commissioners
appoint a Main Street Advisory Board to assist them and the program director
in the operation of the program. The Main Street Advisory Board had
organized in committees reflecting the four work areas outlined above.

What are the benefits of the Main Street Program ??
While Main Street is essentially a community self-help program, the Texas
Main Street Center of The Texas Historical Commission provided assistance
to cities in their revitalization efforts. Local efforts are strengthened through
the professional expertise available to officially designated Main Street cities
in the following areas:

A comprehensive 3 day evaluation and report
Architectural assistance for building owners in the historic district
Visual merchandising and window display consultation
Successful economic development and revitalization approaches
Training for local Main Street board members
Ongoing training of local Main Street directors
Heritage tourism consultation
